IAS Officer Divya Mittal’s Resignation Raises Questions Over Political Pressure
The resignation of Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer Divya Mittal after nearly 13 years of service has triggered a political debate over the working environment faced by civil servants and the alleged influence of politicians on administration. Mittal announced her resignation on August 30, 2026, describing her 13-year journey as unforgettable.
Divya Mittal, a 2013-batch IAS officer and graduate of IIT Delhi and IIM Bangalore, had served in several districts of Uttar Pradesh. She became particularly known for her work in Mirzapur, including efforts that brought piped water to a remote village.
Why Did She Resign?
The exact reason for Mittal’s resignation has not been publicly established.
Reports say she was transferred in May 2026 from her position as Deoria district magistrate to the Revenue Department as Special Secretary. Some reports linked the transfer to a complaint by a local MLA after the MLA was allegedly not invited to a water-project inauguration.
This has led to questions about whether elected representatives should have such influence over the careers and postings of senior civil servants.
However, it is important not to turn these reports into an unproven accusation that a particular BJP leader “tortured” or forced the officer to resign. There is currently no reliable evidence establishing physical torture or proving that a BJP leader directly forced Mittal’s resignation.
Political Debate Intensifies
The issue has nevertheless become political.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav criticised the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, alleging that officials were being pressured to engage in unethical activities, including corruption, manipulation of tenders and politically motivated action. These are political allegations and have not been established as facts against the government.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Prashant Umrao questioned Mittal’s resignation and raised questions about her meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi before she stepped down.
The competing political claims demonstrate how quickly an administrative resignation can become part of a larger political confrontation.
The Bigger Question: Who Controls Civil Administration?
An IAS officer is expected to implement government policy while maintaining professional independence and following the law.
Politicians are elected representatives and have an important role in governance. But when disagreements arise between politicians and administrators, there must be institutional mechanisms to resolve them.
If an officer can face adverse postings merely because a political representative is unhappy with an administrative decision, it raises concerns about the independence of India’s civil services.
At the same time, allegations of political pressure should be investigated through evidence rather than social-media claims or political statements.
A Warning Sign for Civil Servants?
Mittal’s resignation therefore raises a broader question:
Can an IAS officer take difficult administrative decisions without fearing political consequences?
The answer should be yes—provided the officer acts lawfully, transparently and in the public interest.
India needs strong political leadership, but it also needs a professional civil service capable of making administrative decisions without improper pressure.
Divya Mittal’s resignation may ultimately be a personal decision. But the controversy surrounding it has opened a much larger discussion about bureaucratic independence, political influence and accountability in Indian administration.
The most important thing now is not to assume guilt before evidence is available. Instead, any allegation of intimidation, political interference or misconduct should be investigated transparently.
Because whether the government is led by the BJP, Congress, AAP or any other political party, India’s civil servants should be able to perform their constitutional duties without fear, intimidation or improper political pressure.
