The World Map Is Changing: Why the New Map Looks Different
For generations, people around the world have grown up looking at a familiar world map in classrooms, books, offices and digital platforms. But now, the way we visually represent our planet is entering a historic new phase.
On September 4, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed a resolution supporting the use of the Equal Earth projection, a world map designed to represent the relative size of continents and countries more accurately. The resolution received 164 votes in favour, six abstentions and one vote against from the United States.
Why Does the World Map Need to Change?
The traditional Mercator projection has been widely used since the 16th century. It was originally created primarily for navigation because straight lines on the map could represent constant compass directions.
However, Mercator has an important limitation: it greatly exaggerates the apparent size of areas located far from the Equator.
This is why places such as Greenland, northern Europe and parts of North America can appear much larger than their actual land areas.
For example, Greenland can look comparable in size to Africa on a Mercator map. In reality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland.
Africa Will Look Much Bigger
One of the most noticeable changes with the Equal Earth projection is the appearance of Africa.
Africa is already the world’s second-largest continent by land area, but conventional maps can make it appear smaller than it really is compared with regions closer to the poles.
The Equal Earth projection preserves relative land areas much better, allowing Africa, South America and other regions near the Equator to appear closer to their actual proportions.

Europe and North America May Look Smaller
The new projection does not actually shrink Europe, the United States or Canada.
Their real physical size remains exactly the same.
What changes is how their size is displayed on a flat map.
Because the Earth is a sphere, converting the planet into a flat rectangular image inevitably creates some form of distortion. Different map projections simply choose to minimise different types of distortion.
Equal Earth prioritises accurate relative area, while Mercator was particularly useful for navigation.
This Does Not Mean the Old Map Is Banned
The UN resolution does not mean that the Mercator projection has suddenly become illegal or unusable.
Mercator remains useful for certain navigation purposes. The UN resolution instead encourages governments, educational institutions, international organisations and technology companies to consider equal-area projections such as Equal Earth for representing global geography.
So people should not expect every map application to immediately change overnight.
India Also Raised an Important Issue
India supported the UN resolution but also emphasised that representations of India’s territory must follow India’s official position.
The Ministry of External Affairs specifically stressed that depictions involving Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh must accurately reflect India’s stated territorial boundaries.
This highlights an important fact: world maps are not only about geography. They can also involve politics, sovereignty and international disputes.
A Map Can Influence How We See the World
A map may appear to be nothing more than a picture, but it can strongly influence our understanding of the planet.
When one region appears visually larger than another, people can subconsciously develop an inaccurate sense of geographical scale.
The campaign behind the UN resolution, led by Togo and supported by the African Union, argued that more accurate maps can help improve geographical education and global understanding.
The Earth Has Not Changed — Our Picture of It Has
The most important point is that Earth itself has not changed.
Africa has always been approximately 14 times larger than Greenland. The United States, Europe and other countries have not physically become smaller.
What is changing is the way humanity chooses to draw our three-dimensional planet on a two-dimensional surface.
The new Equal Earth projection is therefore not a new planet or a completely redrawn set of international borders. It is a new way of looking at the same Earth.
A New Era for World Maps?
The UN decision could encourage schools, publishers, governments and technology companies to use more geographically representative maps in the future.
For millions of students who have grown up seeing the Mercator projection, the Equal Earth map could provide a very different visual understanding of the world’s continents.
The biggest lesson is simple: a map is a representation of reality, not reality itself.
As technology and global understanding continue to develop, the way humanity represents its planet may continue to evolve as well.
