Kylian Mbappé delivered a spectacular performance as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, scoring a hat-trick and helping José Mourinho’s side make it two wins from two in La Liga.
The result was particularly impressive because Madrid looked far less convincing before the interval. Real Sociedad managed to threaten the hosts and responded quickly after Mbappé opened the scoring.
Mbappé Takes Centre Stage
Mbappé opened the scoring in the 40th minute after Federico Valverde helped create the opportunity. His precise finish gave Madrid the lead, but Real Sociedad responded just minutes later through Luka Sučić.
The French forward, however, was not finished.
After the break, Madrid raised the intensity and Mbappé restored the advantage in the 60th minute following a quick combination with Jude Bellingham.
He completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute when Vinícius Júnior played him through, allowing Mbappé to produce a composed chip over the goalkeeper.
Vinícius and Bellingham Help Change the Game
The second half belonged to Madrid.
Bellingham played a major role in the turnaround, contributing to the attacking momentum and helping create Madrid’s second goal. He was also involved in the build-up to Vinícius Júnior’s goal, which extended the lead to 3–1.
Vinícius was dangerous throughout the match and eventually got his reward in the 68th minute.
Arda Güler also contributed to Madrid’s improved attacking play, giving the team more creativity after the interval.
Mourinho Gets the Response He Wanted
The victory was another positive moment for Mourinho, who has returned to the Real Madrid dugout after more than a decade away.
His side had already secured a dramatic 2–1 victory over Espanyol in the opening league match, but the performance against Real Sociedad showed another side of the team.
Madrid were under pressure during parts of the first half, with the Bernabéu crowd becoming frustrated by some of the team’s mistakes. The response after half-time was considerably better.
The attacking trio of Mbappé and Vinícius, supported by Bellingham and Güler, eventually overwhelmed Sociedad.
A Statement Victory for Real Madrid
The 4–1 victory gives Real Madrid six points from their opening two league matches and provides an early indication that Mourinho’s second spell could be an interesting one.
For Mbappé, the night was even more significant. His three goals announced his arrival in the new campaign in spectacular fashion and made him the clear star of the evening.
Madrid still have areas to improve, particularly after an inconsistent first half, but the second-half performance will give Mourinho and his players plenty of confidence.
